Units of volume
The SI unit of volume is the cubic meter, but in daily life liters (l) and milliliters (ml) are more common: 1 liter = 1,000 ml = 1 dm³, and 1 ml = 1 cm³. The US uses gallons, pints and fluid ounces (fl oz), and the UK uses different “imperial” versions of the same names.
Important differences
1 US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters while 1 imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters, so the two gallons are not the same. 1 US fluid ounce is about 29.57 ml and 1 US pint is about 473.18 ml. For recipes, use the Cooking converter for cups and spoons.
